Every September, a familiar ritual plays out across Brenham. A teenager in a sash catches you in a parking lot and asks if you'd like to buy a season pass to the Washington County Fair. Most of us say yes without thinking twice. It's tradition. It's also, if you're new to town or just haven't looked closely at what you're buying, a little misleading.
The 158th Washington County Fair runs September 11 through 19 this year at the fairgrounds on Blue Bell Road. That's nine days. Your season pass covers four of them.
What the Season Pass Actually Buys You
Advance season tickets went on sale August 4, and they can still be purchased online through the fair's website or directly from an active Fair Queen Candidate, which is the more charming way to do it if you'd rather your ticket money go straight to a local kid's fundraising effort instead of a payment processor. What that pass guarantees is full admission for four days, September 16 through 19, with access to the headline concerts, rodeo action, youth livestock shows, commercial exhibits, and carnival attractions.
Those four days are the back half of the fair. They're also the only four days a season pass will get you through the gate.
The Other Five Days Aren't an Afterthought
The fair opens September 11, and everything that happens between then and the 16th runs on daily gate admission instead of the season pass, with entrance fees that vary by day. This is the part of fair week that doesn't make it into the concert announcements, and it's arguably the part that explains why this fair has survived long enough to call itself the oldest county fair in Texas.
This stretch is where the actual purpose of a county fair shows up: livestock shows, poultry and rabbit exhibits, arts and crafts entries, commercial booths from local businesses, and the youth exhibitors who've spent months raising and training animals for judging. The Washington County Fair Association describes the event as a culmination of volunteers, sponsors, and community supporters who've dedicated their time to area youth, and that description fits the first five days far better than it fits the concert weekend. If your family has a kid in 4-H or FFA, this is when you'll actually see them work.
Who's Playing the Big Four Nights
If you're buying the season pass specifically for the music, here's who you're paying to see, based on the lineup the Brenham Banner-Press reported in July:
- Wade Bowen takes the stage just ahead of releasing his eleventh studio album, out September 25.
- Rick Trevino brings a catalog of fourteen Billboard-charted hits, including his 1997 number-one single "Running Out of Reasons to Run."
- Mark Chesnutt rolls through on his 2025-2026 "Redemption Tour," returning to the road with fourteen No. 1 hits behind him, including "Too Cold at Home" and "Brother Jukebox."
- Black Cat Choir, the self-described party band out of nearby Round Top, plays a mix of classic rock, Texas country, and blues after more than two decades on the road together.
- Los Palominos, a Grammy and Latin Grammy-winning Tejano act from Uvalde, brings four decades of touring experience to the main stage.
- Jackson Wendell, a rising young artist from Lufkin who wrote his first song at fourteen, rounds out the lineup as the newer name on the bill.
That's a genuinely stacked four nights, and the season pass gets you all of it plus the rodeo, livestock shows, and carnival on top. If you only care about the concerts, the pass is a good deal. If you were assuming it also covered the trail ride, the parade, and the first week of livestock judging, it doesn't.
Buying Your Ticket the Local Way
There's something worth preserving in the way tickets actually change hands here. The fair's own materials point buyers toward two options: an online purchase or a direct sale from a Fair Queen Candidate. The second option isn't a workaround. It's the point. Fair Queen Candidates sell passes as part of their campaigns, which means the ticket money you'd otherwise hand to a website ends up supporting a local teenager instead.
For a fair now in its 158th year, that kind of person-to-person exchange is part of what's kept it a community event instead of just another regional festival stop. If you see a candidate working a table outside a local business or church parking lot in the next few weeks, that's worth a second look before you default to buying online.
Planning Your Week
Here's the practical version of everything above. If your interest in the Washington County Fair begins and ends with the concerts, the season pass covering September 16 through 19 is the right purchase, and it's already on sale. If you're the kind of household that shows up for the trail ride, wanders the exhibit halls, or has a kid entering something in the youth competitions, plan on paying daily gate admission for the September 11 through 15 stretch separately, since the pass won't cover it.
Either way, mark your calendar for two different kinds of days. The first half of the fair is Brenham showing up for itself. The second half is Brenham putting on a show for everybody else. Both are worth your time, but only one of them is what you're actually buying when you grab that season pass from a kid in a sash next month.
